As Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announces $6.2M in grants to veterans, an area nonprofit has stepped up to provide care to elderly residents.
According to The Center Square, NorthStar Neighbor is a newly launched nonprofit organization that aims to help individuals that are at high risk of contracting the virus. With the help of healthy and young volunteers, NorthStar Neighbor will help the elderly and the high-risk residents will food and medicine delivery.
This nonprofit foundation is headed by Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson.
“The residents of Minnesota have always been generous and giving, now we have found a way to help out fellow residents in this hour of need. I am sure that we will have a large number of volunteers soon to provide deliveries and extend a helping hand to the ones that are isolated and at high-risk,” Johnson told The Center Square.
If you want to volunteer for the cause or you are in need of services provided by the non-profit log on to www.NorthStarNeighbor.com or call 612-430-8899.
The death toll in Minnesota has risen up to 64 with more than 1,300 positive cases of the COVID-19. Most of the affected individuals are the elderly. Amid the rising tensions regarding the spread of the virus and welfare of those tested positive, Walz has some good news for veterans.
The governor announced that veterans who have been tested positive for coronavirus can get financial assistance grants from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA). This grant will be awarded in connection to the law signed by Walz that reserves $6.2 million for veterans in the state. The funding is for Disaster Relief and Special Needs Grants.
