Rep. Tim Miller (R-Prinsburg) reacted in disagreement with Gov. Tim Walz's decision to re-open school districts with little flexibility.
Walz's plan states that in order for schools to fully re-open with in-person class, they must have fewer than nine COVID-19 cases per 10,000 residents over a 14-day period in a county. Miller said in a press release from the House of Representatives that allowing kids to go back to school will give parents the support they need and that the plan is only thinking about Minneapolis and not taking rural areas into consideration.
“This education plan will harm rural Minnesota,” Miller said in the release. “Under the new guidelines, schools across an entire county are shut down if the cases of COVID-19 are too high in that county. However, I have many schools in my district that serve multiple counties. The governor’s plan does not account for this, and that tells me that the governor was not thinking of rural Minnesota when he crafted this plan.”
Distance learning must also be made available to any student who requests it regardless of their county, according to Walz’s plan.
"The schools of our communities should be able to make the choices that are right for them. Unfortunately, the education of our children will suffer because of Gov. Walz’s authoritarian, misguided decision making,” Miller said.
