MCSO ANNOUNCES NEW INITIATIVE TO LOCATE HIT AND RUN DRIVERS
Last week, MCSO posted a photo of a vehicle involved in a hit and run crash that went unsolved for several months. Thanks to your tips, the vehicle and driver of that vehicle has been located, a confession was obtained, and an arrest warrant will be issued. We can’t thank you enough for assisting us.
The number of hit and run crashes occurring in our county continues to increase. In under one year, more than 150 crashes involving a driver who fled the scene have occurred. Those cases remain unsolved. This trend is unacceptable. As a result, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office has assigned a traffic deputy to review all of these cases and make a directed effort to begin locating the drivers who have been involved in these crashes and for whatever reason, fled the scene. That is likely to include periodic posts on social media asking for tips.
If you are involved in a crash or witness a crash where the other driver has fled, first call 911 with your location and injury status. Try to get a description of the vehicle that was involved in the crash, for example the color and body style (SUV, Sedan, 2-door, 4-door) and direction of travel. Ultimately a tag number, or a partial tag is helpful. Let the dispatcher know the other vehicle has taken off. Being involved in a crash is stressful, we understand that, however, the more information you can provide to us, the better chance we have of catching the hit and run driver.
Be safe.
