Minnesota House Representatives Rick Hansen and Mary Franson marked the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald with a House Resolution. The event took place on November 10, 2025, at the Minnesota State Capitol.
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975, during a severe storm. All 29 crew members died in the incident. Among them were two Minnesotans: Thomas Borgeson and Nolan Church.
“Today, Minnesota remembers the night 50 years ago that the gales of November came early and we solemnly commemorate the tragic sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald,” said Rep. Hansen. “We honor the 29 men who lost their lives, the families and friends who were impacted.”
Rep. Franson added, “Lake Superior holds a special place in Minnesota’s history, and so does the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald. As we remember this tragedy fifty years later, we honor the courage of the crew and the lasting impact their loss had on families and communities across our state.”
The commemoration aimed to recognize both those lost in one of Lake Superior's most well-known maritime disasters and their families from Minnesota.
