The State of Minnesota began sending out unemployment benefits to Unemployment Insurance (UI) applicants throughout the state.
The funds are coming from FEMA's Lost Wages Assistance federal emergency program. The program allows residents to receive an additional $300 per week due to the COVID-19 crisis.
"Because we need to issue more than 1 million separate Lost Wages Assistance payments (along with the regular weekly UI benefit payments), this process will take a few days to complete," according to a statement on the Minnesota UI website.
Officials said residents that are receiving the funds do not need to do anything to receive the funds because the payments will be sent automatically to those who are eligible.
Officials also state that funds from the Lost Wages Assistance program are limited, but Minnesota will continue to ask for additional funding. Moreover, Minnesota state officials are waiting on approval for the payments for the week of Aug. 30.
