Representative Jim Joy of Hawley has issued a statement following the death of Speaker-Emerita Melissa Hortman and an attack involving Senator John Hoffman and his wife. Joy expressed sorrow over Hortman's passing, recognizing her leadership and dedication in the Minnesota Legislature.
"I am heartbroken by the tragic and senseless loss of Speaker-Emerita Melissa Hortman. Her leadership, strength, and steadfast dedication to serving Minnesotans earned the respect of colleagues across the Legislature.
Melissa’s presence at the Capitol left a meaningful and lasting imprint on our state. Her voice, her passion, and her commitment to public service will not be forgotten.
Over the years, we found moments of connection that reminded me of the humanity behind the politics. My prayers are with her family, friends, and colleagues as they grieve this tremendous loss."
Joy also addressed concerns for Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette after a violent incident. He stated:
"I also continue to pray for Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette as they recover from this horrific act of violence. May God bring them healing and strength in the days ahead.
This evil must be condemned without hesitation. Political violence has no place in Minnesota or anywhere in America. May God comfort those in mourning and guide law enforcement as they work to bring justice."
