House Republicans in Minnesota have introduced a new school safety agenda aimed at increasing security in schools, improving access to mental health care, and addressing violent crime. The announcement was made in Saint Paul on September 5, 2025.

Rep. Cal Warwas spoke about the need for these measures. “Parents send their kids to school to learn, and should have a reasonable assurance that they are in a safe environment. This agenda takes meaningful steps to strengthen school security, ensure access to mental health care, and keep dangerous criminals off our streets - this is what every family in Minnesota deserves,” said Warwas.

The proposed plan includes several initiatives: giving schools more flexibility in how they use funding for safety improvements; expanding safety funding so non-public schools can also benefit; creating grants through legislation such as the SHIELD Act (HF 15); making School Resource Officers available at every school; revising restrictions on doctors’ ability to use their medical judgment; and increasing funding for mental health treatment beds.
